Sleep health begins with good sleep hygiene. Quality, uninterrupted sleep is important for many reasons. Research has shown that after a good sleep, people retain information and perform better on memory tasks. Our bodies also require long periods of sleep in order to restore, grow muscle, repair tissue, and synthesize hormones. As adults get older, ailments or health issues can interrupt sleep, creating further health issues, not to mention cranky moods.

Sleep Health Tips

If getting a good night’s sleep is an issue, a good place to start is by creating good sleep habits.

  • Stick to a schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
  • Eliminate light an hour before going to bed.
  • Ensure you’re sleeping in a quiet, dark room.
  • Avoid eating a large meal, consuming caffeine or alcohol before bedtime.
  • Get some exercise. Being physically active during the day can help you fall asleep more easily at night.
  • Talk to your doctor if you suspect a medication is causing sleep issues as sometimes there are other medications or treatment options.
  • Go to bed at a time that will allow for 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
